Saranda is one of the most charming cities on the Albanian Riviera, and during the summer months it seems like half of Tirana relocates here to enjoy the bustling beach and livelier nightlife along its crowd-filled seaside promenade. What was once a sleepy fishing village is now a thriving city, and while Saranda has lost much of its charm in the last two decades, it has retained much of its charisma. Saranda is a great base for exploring the beaches in the area such as Pulebardhat, Pasqyrat, Manastiri etc or you can visit the Ksamilbeaches and the UNESCO World Heritage Butrint if you have your own vehicle or you can also use a taxi or public transport. The town's name comes from Ayia Saranda, an early monastery dedicated to 40 saints; its bombed-out remains (including some surviving frescoes) are still high on the hill above the town. But also the small castle of Lekursi, which offers spectacular views and a good restaurant, or the very well-preserved and restored monastery of St George. The town was called Porto Edda after Mussolini's daughter in the 1940s during the Second World War. Saranda is well connected with cruisers coming from all over the world and Corfu (the Greek town before Saranda) is full of tourists from the Nordic countries or Eastern European countries in summer because of its climate, food and beauty.
