Burgas is the largest city in southeastern Bulgaria and the second largest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, and with an area of 253,644 km² it is also one of the largest in the country. Among the first inhabitants of the region were the Thracians, who around the 6th century BC created a series of settlements in the territory of today's Burgas, along with the nearby towns of Apollonia, Mesembria, Anchialo.
