Stari Bar consists of the ruins of an ancient city that was the predecessor of today's modern port of Bar. The ruins are surrounded by mountain slopes on three sides. The name of the city is probably related to its location opposite the Italian city of Bari, which lies on the other side of the Adriatic. Stari Bar used to be the seat of both the Illyrians and the Byzantines. It was fortified by the Venetians, which did not prevent its conquest by the Turks, who also destroyed it when they left in 1878. Nevertheless, some of the winding streets, walls, Turkish baths, churches, bell towers and aqueduct have been preserved. In the surroundings of Bar there are olive groves, which prove the ancient tradition of growing olives in the area. Some trees are two millennia old.
ONE OF THE WORLD’S OLDEST olive trees is located near Stari Bar in Montenegro. “Stara Maslina” is said to be over 2,000 years old, and is a truly stunning sight. A side of the tree is unfortunately completely burnt out, due to a lightning strike.
