The largest Istrian city is Pula, which has 65 thousand inhabitants. It is the economic and cultural centre of the peninsula. It is also an important commercial and military port located in the protected bay of the Istrian peninsula, in which there are also smaller islands such as Uljanik, Sveti Andrija and Sveta Katarina. Important industries such as textiles, glassmaking and shipyards are located here. Pula is one of Croatia's important transport hubs. There is an airport, a busy railway line and a junction of roads connecting the coast with the centre of Istria and Pula with Rijeka. It is also an important passenger port from which ships depart for Venice.

Because of the beautiful sights, tourists also make trips here from more distant resorts. There are many easily accessible Roman and medieval monuments in the city. Among them, the well-preserved amphitheatre built by the Romans stands out.

When you get tired of sunbathing on the beach and taking in the local sights, take a stroll to the bustling harbour where you'll see tall cranes and huge cargo ships. Pula is one of Istria's major tourist destinations. In the town itself there is no waterfront where you can swim. Therefore, you will have to go south and southwest (Veruda, Verudela, Zlatne stijene) from the centre or northwest (Puntizela). There are also large hotel complexes built in these parts. Nowadays they are either new or renovated. You don't have to worry about being cut off from the city's entertainment as there are buses to the city.
