Obzor is situated in a beautiful landscape, in a bay of the Black Sea, framed by the Balkan Ring (Stara Planina) about 60 km south of Varna and 74 km from Burgas.

It's beautiful location is reflected in the original ancient name Heliopolis (Sun City). The original Greek naval base later became an important Roman fortress. In the Middle Ages there was an impregnable Bulgarian fortress Kozyak, protecting a port of great economic importance for the Bulgarian Black Sea trade in the 13th and 14th centuries. The ruins of the medieval fortress are about 3 km from today's Obzor. It also features the ruins of the Temple of Jupiter on the remains of the Roman walls.
