The northernmost major Bulgarian seaside resort Balchik is a very nice resort over a wide bay. The buildings are in the hills above the sea and cluster around three little squares connected by a main vertical street. The town itself and its surroundings are very picturesque because of the limestone cliffs and rock formations above the town. Balchik is a cheaper place compared to nearby Albena and Golden Sands, as there are many natives here. It's a normal Bulgarian town, not an outright tourist resort. Even the Roman poet Ovid admired its beauty and called it the White City. This characteristic is still true today, thanks to the many houses built of white stone and the unique "white" sandstone rocks between which the town is situated. Balchik is little affected by international tourism and still retains the atmosphere of a Black Sea port town.

Bulgaria is also beginning to attract golfers. A few years ago, no one would have taken the offer of golf in Bulgaria seriously. Today, however, that is not the case. The world's leading investors and designers are bringing to life a sport that is not part of Bulgaria's sporting tradition, yet has the potential to become very popular. The area along the Black Sea coast in the unspoilt countryside of the north-eastern part of the country, close to the town of Balchik and the Romanian border, is almost destined to become a mecca for golfers. But the real pearl among European courses is the Thracian Cliffs resort course. Players are in for an unforgettable experience. Gary Player himself has said that it is his best course, the "Pebble Beach of Europe", and that it aspires to be one of the most beautiful courses in the world. In this case, the extraordinary beauty is also balanced by the difficulty, or for the player, the challenge of all challenges.
