Archaeological excavations of the Late Antique fortress are being carried out 150 meters from the complex - according to preliminary estimates, it is a cultural layer with ruins of the temple and buildings in its vicinity from the V-III century BC. In 2012, a unique gold ring with a miniature model of the rotunda above the Holy Sepulchre, dating from the 6th century AD, was discovered there. An interesting event was the discovery of buildings dating back to the V-VI century AD. According to archaeologists, it is a small winery that belonged to a monastery. These excavations are curated and sponsored by the European Union. Around EUR 3 million has already been allocated for the promotion and preservation of the excavations at Cape Athanasius, which will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the further development of the region. The Chapel of St Athanasius is characterised by its unique microclimate - there is always a light breeze in summer and it is never exhaustingly hot. There is a viewing platform on the promontory with a breathtaking view of the sea. The foothills of the Balkan Mountains have always been valued for their healing air. The combination of sea and mountain air creates a healing bouquet that helps cure asthma and other lung ailments. The population of Byala is about 3,000 people. In winter the town does not die, like some resorts, but continues to live its measured life. Due to Byala's convenient location, it is easily accessible from the two major coastal cities of Varna and Burgas. To the airport in Varna it is 50 km by a good and flat road, to the airport in Burgas - about 60 km. Near Byala there are beautiful and famous wild beaches - Kara Dere and Irakli.
