Nessebar is one of the most visited Bulgarian resorts on the Black Sea coast. It lies 38 km from Burgas and 100 km south of Varna on the rocky peninsula of the same name, which loosely follows the sandy Sunny Beach to the south.

The town was declared an architectural and archaeological reserve in 1056. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. This picturesque place is characterised by its Black Sea-style development of two-storey wooden houses crowding together in winding streets. Numerous churches, mainly from the Byzantine period (St. John the Baptist Church from the 11th century, St. Stephen's from the 10th century with beautiful murals from the Bulgarian National Revival and the Pantokrator Church) add to the atmosphere.
