Balchik, the northernmost important Bulgarian seaside resort, is a very nice resort above a wide bay. The buildings are above the sea in the hills and are grouped around three small squares placed one above the other connected by a main vertical street. The town itself and its surroundings are very picturesque due to the limestone cliffs and rock formations above the town. Balčik is a cheaper place compared to nearby Albena and Golden Sands, because there are a lot of natives. It is a normal Bulgarian town, not a purely tourist resort. Already the Roman poet Ovid admired its beauty and called it the White City. This characteristic is still valid today, partly due to the many houses built of white stone and partly due to the unique "white" sandstone rocks between which the town is located. Balchik is little affected by international tourism and still retains the atmosphere of a Black Sea port town.
