Burgas is the largest city in southeastern Bulgaria and the second largest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, and with an area of 253,644 km² it is also one of the largest in the country. According to the latest NSI census as of 31 December 2015, it has 203,017 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest city in the country. Several nature reserves and protected areas, ancient and medieval villages, the Black Sea and annual festivals attract many tourists. Burgas, located at the westernmost point of the Black Sea, gave its name to the bay of the same name, which is the largest and most populated on the Bulgarian Black Sea continent. The city is surrounded by the Burgas Lakes- Burgas, Atanasovsko and Mandrensko and the Black Sea to the east.

Among the first inhabitants of the region were the Thracians, who around the 6th century BC created a series of settlements in the territory of today's Burgas, along with the nearby towns of Apollonia, Mesembria, Anchialo. In 2012, two shopping centres were opened in Burgas. The opening of a multifunctional sports hall and a coastal asphalt road connecting Burgas with the new district of Kyosheto and the Sarafovo district is planned.
